DEFINITION (EN)

What is Create GBM

Create GBM reads history and society through the conditions of terrain. It connects seeing, comparing, creating, and researching into inquiry-based learning that begins from place.

Core concept (definition)

Create GBM is an educational platform that uses 3D terrain models (GBM: Geographic Base Material) to integrate geography and history and explore the relationship between terrain and human activity.

Learning structure (extended definition)

By layering terrain, hydrology, historic-site data, maps, and primary sources, Create GBM lets learners reason about why a particular place gave rise to a particular history, and how people have lived with that environment over time.

Inquiry statement (tagline)

Create GBM provides the foundation for inquiry-based learning that reads history from place.

Japanese wording (reference)

Create GBMとは、3D立体地形(GBM: Geographic Base Material)を用いて、地理と歴史を統合的に分析し、地形と人間活動の関係を探究するための教育プラットフォームである。

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Four pathways into Create GBM

See terrain, form a question, connect it to evidence, and then make a 3D relief model by hand. Create GBM is designed so learners can move between these pathways according to the inquiry in front of them.

01 · Pathway

Read terrain as the conditions that shape history

Relief is the very condition that shapes historical events. Create GBM is an entry point that uses 3D terrain to make the contemporary choices around movement, defence, and everyday life concrete.

02 · Pathway

Test "what if" with simulations

Through interactive content such as the Coastline Time Machine and the Water Network, learners can re-live how a change in environmental conditions would have changed geography and human choice.

03 · Pathway

Think by creating 3D blank relief maps

With the 3D white relief map editor, learners can layer hydrology, historic sites, infrastructure, and points of attention onto terrain, then make a physical model that reflects their own question. The act of making becomes part of thinking historically and geographically.

04 · Pathway

Connect learning through the Knowledge Repository

A curated link archive that crosses geography, history, and science so that the right resource is always within reach — from elementary school to research level.

DATA & CREDITS

Data sources & credits

Create GBM is a project started by the Hamada Hideki Lab. at Tamagawa University. It provides a range of contents based on the educational vision that learning history through 3D terrain can bring learners closer to the thoughts and values of people in a region.

It is an academic effort to develop inquiry-learning materials with the explicit purpose of fostering the ability to pose questions and to read geography together with history.

The map and terrain rendering on this site uses the following data sources.
  • GSI (Geospatial Information Authority of Japan) — chizuin tile set: standard, pale, blank, latest aerial, hillshade, colour-elevation, and red-relief layers.
  • Sea-area expression for the colour-elevation layer is built from materials of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department, Japan Coast Guard.
  • OpenStreetMap data via MIERUNE (© OpenStreetMap contributors), used for distribution overlays and parts of the basemap.
  • Elevation tiles in Terrarium format: Mapzen Terrain Tiles (AWS Open Data).
  • Water-network visualisation: hydrology data from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors), reformatted and optimised as GeoJSON.
